Nissan Maxima SE 3.0 Common Problems and Solutions
Nissan Maxima SE 3.0 Common Problems and Solutions
I have recently had the priviledge of working on the 2000 Nissan Maxima Se 3.0V6. This is a great car, with some common issues reported from other Nissan Maxima owners. One common problem is the intermittent rough idle and the SES light coming on. There are a lot of mechanics telling tall tales about the root cause of these problems, so I thought I would investigate it further.
The first thing we will look at is the SES trouble codes. If the SES light trouble codes show "Primary Ignition Failure", this is generally pointing to the ignition coils. The code may designate a cylinder, or it may say "Multiple Ignition Failure." Obviously, if you are lucky enough to get a code telling which cylinder it is, replace the ignition coil for that cylinder. Pay close attention to the location of the cylinder when ordering the part, as the front and rear cylinders have different ignition coils. They are easy to replace in the front. Simply remove the plastic engine cover using the appropriate hex head screwdriver and then remove the 10mm bolt holding the coil in place. Un-clip the plug from the coil and remove it. Pop the new plug in place and clip the wiring plug back in. Now put the 10mm screw back in, and tighten it down. Replace the cover and that's it. Experienced mechanics can get this done in less than 10 minutes. If you are a novice, prepare for a half hour.
The rear cylinders are also easy, but will require a long extension. i would recommend 6-12 inches for the extension. Locate the 10mm bolt holding it in place and remove it. Unplug the wiring plug, and replace it. Bolt it back in and that's finished. Be careful not to drop the bolt down in the engine though.
What if you get the multiple ignition failure code? Do you replace them all? You can, but the coils run about $70.00 each. Multiply that by 6 and you have a fairly expensive bill. If you have someone else do the work, you can expect to pay over $500.00 for the coil replacements. There is a very simple way to find the bad coils. Remove the engine cover from the front of the engine. Now remove all the 10mm bolts securing the ignition coils in place. Place the ignition coil bolts and the engine cover screws in a ziplock bag and put them in the glove box. Drive the car for a few days until it starts running rough again. leave the car running, and using a pair of channel locks or large plyers (preferably ones that are insulated), pull each coil out one at a time. If the engine DOES NOT change its idle when an ignition coil is removed, you know you have found the bad coil. Replace that coil. Leave them unsecured and drive it some more. Repeat the process until the car returns to normal. In my experience, I have never replaced more than 2 coils. This will end up saving hundred of dollars in diagnostic fees, parts and service.
Good luck, and stay TUNED!

Nissan Maxima
Nissan Maxima
The Nissan Maxima offers a combination of performance, luxury and interior room at a very competitive price. This family sedan sits in the same class as the Volkswagen Passat and Mazdaspeed 6.
The Maxima badge has been around since 1982 and has always boasted the one of the best V6 power plants in the industry. The latest version continues this trend.
Sitting in the market, above the Nissan Altima, the Maxima has a distinct presence on the road and positions itself firmly in the center of its competitors.
The base model SE is the sporty model with a firm suspension and 18-inch wheels, while the more luxury-oriented SL has 17-inch wheels and a slightly softer suspension. Interior for the SL is in leather upholstery, while an exclusive ‘elite’ package turns the three-seat rear into a two-person environment with the addition of a control panel for seat heaters, suns shades and the DVD entertainment system.
The Maxima is only a mid-size salon. The interior space is something that needs to be seen to be believed. The front seats are supportive and wide; the console is sleek and modern; while driving ergonomics is hindered by design where some buttons have been created form before function, and the orange illumination offers very poor contrast.
Standard features for both models include an eight-speaker audio system, one-touch up-down front windows and keyless entry; While the SL boasts 17-inch wheels, wood interior trim, heated leather seats, a 320-watt Bose audio system and HID headlights.
The interior is spacious, while the V6 offers a balanced ride with superb handling and array of luxury extras and options. Amongst the competition, the Volkswagen Passat has a big V6 engine, more a luxurious interior with better material finish, and more road-feel.

2005 Nissan Maxima
All the Info on the 2005 Nissan Maxima
Like many cars in the 30K dollar mark, the Maxima is partially a luxury and sport sedan. One thing that Nissan offers that many others don’t is a pretty sweet 6 speed manual transmission for the true sports car fans that want a little more when grabbing the groceries.
The exterior of the car starts out with a re-vamped grill with the huge Nissan logo right in the middle. Near the grill are the sleek head lights, inside are high intensity discharge Xenon lights that turn night into day. The car had a distinct rear end that has a sporty look with 4 chrome tips poking out highlighting the power that lies under the hood. In all the car has very strong lines that give it a tough look that I really like. The interior is a blend of cutting edge technology and comfort. Then the spacious Nissan car [http://www.jdm-4u.com/nissan_cars.htm] redesigned interior and exterior just adds to the confusion of sport or luxury.
One of Nissans most unusual pieces is the center sky view, which is a piece of glass that spans the whole length of the auto. The sky view can be replaced with a standard sun roof if desired. The sky view gives the Maxima a really open feeling and of course has automatic shades if need be. As for the power-train the Nissan has a wonderful 3.5 liter 265 hp DOHC that gets up and goes. It produces 255 foot pounds and had a pretty impressive power band when it’s matched up with the optional 6 speed.

Nissan Maxima Common Problems and Solutions
Nissan Maxima Common Problems and Solutions
There seem to be some common issues among Nissan Maxima owners who have the 2000-2004 models. These tend to range from intermittent rough idle to reported transmission problems, to a drastic decrease in performance. We are looking in to the real cause of the problems, and offering our advice on what to do, and what NOT to do.
We looked into how to troubleshoot the intermittent rough idle problem in the latest article. It can be attributed to the ignition coils, which have proven to go bad in the first few years of ownership. The next issue we are going after is the supposed transmission problems I have been hearing about. This problem has been described as a hesitation in the shifting from 1st to 2nd, or 2nd to 3rd under half to full throttle. It also causes hard shifting, and the appearance of a "rev limiter" around 4000 rpms. The TSB (technical service bulletin) out for this says that the solenoid control assembly in the transmission is to blame. This assembly is responsible for the correct shift times for the transmission. Sounds like the right answer, right?
Maybe. These control assemblies can go bad, but it is only due to the build up of debris in the transmission system. This debris comes from clutch material and burned transmission fluid. With that much clutch material worn down, you would most likely have some slipping in the transmission occurring. If it is indeed slipping, then I would look at a transmission rebuild or replacement. Simply replacing the control assembly would just delay the inevitable, and cost you 500-750 dollars.
The issue I have described is NOT the transmission. I repeat. NOT the transmission. In my example, I have not described any slipping of the transmission. In a lot of cases, this "transmission" symptom is accompanied by a pinging engine and low performance. This is most likely a fuel related problem. The ping is from a lean fuel mixture (not enough gas). The poor performance could be from the same cause. If the knock sensor or the trans solenoids were bad, you would eventually get an engine trouble code from the ECU/TCU. The first place to check is the fuel filter in the gas tank. There is not an external filter on these cars, and that filter in the tank is SELDOM changed. The new filter should fix the engine ping, the performance issues, and the "transmission" type symptoms. The "rev limiter" feel is from the engine not having enough fuel to continue raising the rpms. The hard shift is from the transmission anticipating the faster shift needed at higher rpms, but the engine is not performing correctly, so the acceleration is not there to complete the smooth shift. All these systems work intricately together. Lower the fuel pressure available to the injectors, and all of the above symptoms can occur.
Be sure to have the codes checked. In a lot of cases I have seen, these issues come and go with no check engine light. That is a good sign it could be the fuel filter. You may also have a dirty throttle body, which I recommend cleaning when you replace the filter.
Good luck, and stay TUNED!

2007 Nissan Maxima
2007 Nissan Maxima: 300, Avalon Take Notice!
During the late 1990s, Nissan rolled out a new version of its Maxima to the critical acclaim of automobile experts as well as to consumers who snapped up the snazzy car in record numbers. Nissan carried the momentum forward until when the 2004 model was released; it was perceived by many as a step backward and sales dropped accordingly. Now, Nissan is poised to release a new Maxima and the company has the Chrysler 300 and Toyota Avalon in its crosshairs!
Make no mistake about it: when consumers are disappointed with a particular model they will look elsewhere; not even brand loyalty can keep consumers in the fold. Nissan found this out painfully in 2003 as the first Maximas were released as 2004 models. Sales dropped as potential buyers complained about the cheap looking interior as well as the uninspiring exterior.
Nissans loss was Chrysler’s and Toyota’s gain as the full sized, rear wheel drive Chrysler 300 has performed very well and the all-new-for-2006 Toyota Avalon is evoking favorable comparisons with current Lexus models. Nissan, realizing that lost sales was lost income hurried the Maxima’s redesign and has pushed the new car up market. This means that the all new Maxima will probably more resemble a vehicle from Nissan’s luxury car division Infiniti than any Nissan has to date.
So, what are the major changes? They will include the following: a redesigned exterior that takes its styling cues from Infiniti; a much more luxurious and refined interior; and more optional equipment made standard.
Sure, you will pay more for the new Maxima, but in the end you are certain to drive away with a car that competes effectively with Chrysler and Toyota for sales in the all important large car segment. This is good news for Nissan and for you, the potential buyer.

2002-2003 Nissan Maxima
Used Car Opinion - 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima
Last of the Maximas built in Japan, the 2002-2003 model holds special appeal for some people, not only for the higher quality assembly associated with Japan, but also because it had some great standard features like xenon lights and the upgraded 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine.
In my particular search, I was able to locate a 2002 Maxima GLE for $7,000 ($5,830 US) on the road, with 120,000 kms (74,500 miles) on it. That makes it the best value I've seen for a car, period, considering the age, condition, quality, type of automobile and reliability. Of course, your search will vary.
Most of the SEs and all of the GLEs you will find will come standard with a lot of things, like automatic climate control, leather seats, power seats, Bose sound system with subwoofer, moonroof, xenon lights, 17-inch rims and tires, heated seats and steering wheel and more. GXEs lack many of these features, but are still the same car underneath.
The features are a big draw, as is the reliability, which carries a very good reputation. Doing my research, I found that the 2000 and 2001 models had some issues, but the 2002 and 2003 are fine. The example I got was absolutely flawless. The interior was in brand-new condition (no wrinkles on the leather even) and drove like a brand new car - no squeaks, rattles, or bad noises of any kind. This was very impressive compared to other cars I've seen of the same age and mileage.
One of the bigger features of this Maxima is the use of the 3.5-liter version of Nissan's VQ V6. This engine is used in many Nissan and Infiniti products, but perhaps made most famous in the 350Z and G35 cars. Nissan/Infiniti use a fancier exhaust to give the engine a more exotic sound in those cars, and it's a real shame that the exotic exhaust note isn't present in this car. This engine has won a lot of awards, and in some ways it's easy to see why. It's incredibly smooth and fast-revving, and produces great power all the way from idle to redline, building smoothly with no dead spots in the rev range.
What I personally don't like about it is that it makes close to 50 hp less in this Maxima than it does in some other cars, which is a huge difference. I also don't like that the sound has no character to it. This is not a big issue to most people, but to a car enthusiast like me, it matters - it sounds pretty utilitarian, like a Ford minivan V6 or something. Lastly, I dislike how it requires premium fuel. It actually MUST have premium, otherwise it'll turn on the check engine light on you, and I hate the idea of putting premium into a standard non-premium sedan, let alone a $7,000 used car.
My other complaint with the Maxima is that the suspension just doesn't have the right balance. It doesn't soak up the bumps all that well, but the ride car get a little choppy and harsh at times, in addition to being floaty. The SE is much worse still. The rear suspension isn't independent, so it does a little left-to-right dance on expansion joints on the highway, but that I can look past. I just really dislike that it has a suspension that is equally as harsh as my other car, a Volkswagen GTI VR6, but handling prowess could not be more different.
Even though it has its drawbacks, the Maxima is a well-made, capable, comfortable sedan. It's roomy enough for four of the largest adult humans you can find (five if they're not huge) and its wealth of features is a great big plus. It seems to be very well targeted towards North American buyers, which is why it is a success here. So far, it has been exceedingly reliably for me, and it, overall, leaves people in disbelief when they hear the price. If a midsize sedan is what you're looking for, the 2002-2003 Maxima is a great bet.
